risk assessment
Risk assessment
What
is a risk assessment?
Risk
assessment is a document which must attend any filming and recce schedule. This
makes sure the person responsible when on location has considered the safety of
everyone involved in the filming from the contributor, the crew to the general
public. They need to think through the filming day and consider what the
potential hazards are, what injury could result from this hazard and how the
risk can be reduced or avoided.
The
risk assessment should be structured and applied so as to help everyone to:
-
Check
whether the measures in place are adequate
-
Evaluate
the risks in order to make the best informed selection of work equipment,
chemical substances or preparations used the fitting out of the workplace, and
the organisation of work.
The
producer is responsible for ensuring that risk assessments are completed for
their productions. In practice, they may delegate risk assessment to other
people, such as production managers, designers, heads of departments, the location
manager or the unit manager.
In
this case, the producer must ensure that:
- The person delegated is competent to perform
the assessment, if necessary, by providing training in risk assessment
procedures or other aspects of health and safety
- The
assessment is carried out
-
Necessary controls are implemented effectively throughout the production
- The assessment is reviewed where changes or
new circumstances have made the original assessment no longer valid.

Time rushing
(rushing to finish is when hazards get missed, or people start taking risks)

If the
cameraman rushes to finish filming then the quality of the videos may be
rubbish and we won’t get the videos that we wanted and it is waste of time to
go back to the location again, where we could use that time to edit the
videos.

Feedback - Miss Spencer
Brick Analysis feedback - there is some really interesting work in here Kannika, you have covered a wide range of aspects in your analysis and thought about technical code, characterisation, setting and many other important aspects. However it is let down because none of the images can be viewed. Gather all of your images together again on and we will fix this together. I will show you where you have gone wrong so we can fix this for the future.
Level 2/3 border.
Titles feedback - Again a good start - but I would like detail on how you will use the influence of these ideas in your own film. Also can you make the images smaller so that they don't 'bleed' into the titles of the blog. this makes it difficult to read the blog.
Representation feedback - You have done some detailed research into this area, even using a media theorist, which is excellent. However this post also needs some examples from the film genre you are working on. That includes examples and images to illustrate your point.

films title and logo
I think that that the font is very original and it has that unique and vintage style. its also plain and simple, and in my opinion, I think this font is also professional and mature as this font is for an action film, but I do think that it will also work well with my horror film.
I think the font in this opening sequence is not so fancy but it does have that mysterious look. I think this suits my film opening sequence because its also mysterious too. I also think that this font is very mature and it looks serious. The colour of it also goes well with the background pictures as they're black.
representation in horror (including characters in the film)
Representation
Representation can change overtime as many people believe
that media is powerful, so it changes people’s attitudes and beliefs.
The seven areas of representation are;
-
Regional
identify (e.g. an unnecessary disliking of each other, just because
you’re from a different part of the country)
-
Age (a
separation of people by which generation they come from)
-
Sexuality (e.g. people
who are really deep inside and what they want to make themselves happy, no
matter what the situation)
-
Gender (a
separate by physical nature, but being brought together by being so opposite)
-
Physical
ability/ disability (e.g. people whose body’s do not function as well as
others)
-
Ethnicity (e.g.
racism and the discrimination there is in the world)
-
Class and
status (e.g. a huge divide in the human species due to money.
Having high status is having lots of material possessions whereas being poor is
having the lack of the basic human necessities).
An example of regional identify TV drama is EastEnders. From
what I already knew from EastEnders, it’s the accents that point us towards
their regional identify. Their accents are very ‘east-end’ and they use cockney
rhyming slang ever now and again. The
setting of the show is in a little village and meeting places like the pub
could represent that they are in London village.
An example of how media represents age is ‘Skins’ a TV Drama
series. ‘Skins’ is a young adult’s television drama series which follows the
life of teenagers in their everyday lives. In one of the series opening scenes
we see a character (Tony) watching an older woman, through his windows, getting
ready. This shows how teenage boys are stereotypically shown constantly have
sexual fantasises.
Sophie Webster in Coronation Street goes against the typical
stereotype of homosexual women. This is because she appears to be very feminine
looking with long brown hair; she wears a fair amount of makeup and wears
costumes that consist of fashionable clothes of the latest trends. She is
considered to fit in as she has both male and female friends and has a job at
the local shop and gets on with everyone in the street without controversy.
Female characters’ professional lives are usually ignored, or
more often, they are portrayed as housewives who take care of children and
family chores everyday, but not ambitious at all in building a career. For the
relatively small amount of women who try to further their professional lives,
they invariable seem to fail. For example Samantha from EastEnders left her
husband to purse a career in modelling, but was unsuccessful. In this way, female characters are often
punished for pursuing their own careers at the expense of their boyfriends or
husbands.
In need of pity and charity- Barnes claims that this is
stereotype has grown in popularity in recent years because of television
appeals such as Children in Need. Disables as victims- Barnes found that when
people with disabilities are featured in television drama, they are three times
more likely than able-bodied characters to be killed off.
Class of status- Made in Chelsea- social class is very
important in made in Chelsea as even the name of the TV show states where the
characters are from. The characters are very posh and rich, and appear to lead
simple lives without stressful nine to five jobs.

recce
Recce is a military term that has been borrowed by the media in the United Kingdom, derived from "reconniter", the verb from of "reconnaissance". it is a pre-production visit to a location to work out its suitability for filming/photography, including access to necessary facilities, assessment of any potential lighting or sound issues and risk and hazard assessments.
casting
Casting
For our horror film opening we decided on having 2 characters. We decided on having a
boy and a mother, due to the fact that this was the invention we saw when
researching into the genre of horror films. We would need to select 2
characters around the age of 6-10 years old and an adult around 30+, but at
this moment, there are 2 available people, which are Sophie’s brother and herself
to be the actors. Even though Sophie is only 17 years old, she’s willing to be
in the film, which makes everything a lot easier to film, as she knows what she
has to do and we don’t need to waste time explaining anything, as we planned it
ourselves. We think that these 2 characters are the most appropriate to act in
our film opening in order to appeal to the needs of our target audience.

The Storyline
Curse of the Illusioned mind
Narrative: A young boy named Riley is casually playing with his toys, all of a sudden he begins to hear a whispering voice coming from behind him, he looks but there is nothing to be seen. Riley’s mother then begins to call him down for his dinner. However Riley does not respond to her call and gets up and begins to draw on his walls, his mother then calls again sounding a little concerned as Riley has not came down. It becomes clear something is wrong as Riley walks towards his toy tool box and pulls out a knife. Riley’s mother calls again this time sounding very concerned. She decides to go and see what Riley is up to. She starts walking up the stairs as Riley walks towards the door still carrying the knife. They both reach the door and his mother pushes it open finding Riley clearly possessed with big dilated eyes holding the knife. Throughout the opening scene there will be continuous whispers pulling Riley into the trap and getting into his mind.
the pitch
PITCH
Introduction
This is my PowerPoint presentation
and it is about the film opening scene that I will be making. In this
PowerPoint I will be talking about the pitch, about the storyline of the film,
the production, narrative, locations for where my film may take place, camera
styles, characters and target audience.
Production Company
As
the production company would focus on social realism films, we chose to call it
the Dollhouse Productions. Our film would focus on stigmatised issues, they
would confront the viewers misconceptions and make them realise the truth
behind certain issues.
Main Narrative
A young
boy named Riley is casually playing with his toys, all of a sudden he begins to
hear a whispering voice coming from behind him, he looks but there is nothing
to be seen. Riley’s mother then begins to call him down for his dinner. However
Riley does not respond to her call and gets up and begins to draw on his walls,
his mother then calls again sounding a little concerned as Riley has not came
down. It becomes clear something is wrong as Riley walks towards his toy tool
box and pulls out a knife. Riley’s mother calls again this time sounding very
concerned. She decides to go and see what Riley is up to. She starts walking up
the stairs as Riley walks towards the door still carrying the knife. They both
reach the door and his mother pushes it open finding Riley clearly possessed
with big dilated eyes holding the knife. Throughout the opening scene there
will be continuous whispers pulling Riley into the trap and getting into his
mind.
Characters
For
our horror film opening we decided on having 2 characters. We decided on having
a boy and a mother, due to the fact that this was the invention we saw when
researching into the genre of horror films. We would need to select 2
characters around the age of 6-10 years old and an adult around 30+, but at

willing to be in the film, which makes everything a lot easier to film, as she
knows what she has to do and we don’t need to waste time explaining anything,
as we planned it ourselves. We think that these 2 characters are the most
appropriate to act in our film opening in order to appeal to the needs of our target
audience.
Camera Styles
Our
camera style we have chosen is very unique within the film industry. We have
chosen to use the handheld (POV) camera style, allowing the audience to become
closer to our main character and to help feel the struggles our main character
is going through, as such, seeing it through his eyes. Breaking of the ‘fourth
wall’ allows our audience to feel more involved. This style also increases the
verisimilitude the handheld effect is often used within the thriller genre, but
we have chosen to adopt this style in order to make our film original within
the genre.
Another
‘style’ we’d like to use is the extreme close ups used when displaying
information on computer/phone screens so the audience can feel the emotions
Riley is feeling, and get the audience more involved with the narrative. These
shots make our reactions and plot more realistic.
Our Target Audience
Insidious is a
film, which is also based on possession, which is why I did a research on it
because it is similar to my film. According
to youGovProfies, most of insidious fans are female, aged
between 25-39.
Most of
the audiences have a career as an architecture and interior designer or
community and social worker. They usually spend their spare times on using
the Internet, doing shopping online because they find it easier to shop on-line
as it is quick and easy, but even though they like to shop, they always lookout
for special offers as they think it’s stressful to be in debt.
They also
spend 1-5 hours per week watch television because they spend more time on
social network, such as Facebook and Twitter. They spend their time
on-line 36-40 hours per week.
The audience
of our horror are
people aged 18 and over, this is because it isn't appropriate for younger ages
due to the content of strong violence, language and thriller in which people
may find offensive and disturbing. We chose the certificate of 18 because we
didn't have any dialogue in our film opening we didn't need to worry about bad
language and there are no graphic scenes in order to be an 18.
Our horror opening
involves a lot of suspicion movements such as a kid holding a knife; therefore
the target audience would have to include people who enjoy tension and
suspense. Additionally, the audience would be people who enjoy films that use
mystery as there’s throughout. Also, the soundtrack we use is a nursery rhyme,
which is usually associated with children and it, is a convention of horror.
