Audience Demographics

 Herbert Blumer, in 1950 said that during the war Hitler and Stalin attempted to use the media to persuade mass audiences to follow their policies through posters.

 Herbert Blumer said;
 1.       The mass media audience came from all walks of life
 2.       The mass is an anonymous group
 3.      There exists little interaction or change of experience between members of the mass
 4.      The mass is very loosely organised and cannot act within the unity of a crowd.
Demographics
Definition: demographic is the study of human population.
Demographics are broken into bands depending on people’s jobs or status.
This is shown in the table below.
The 5 main categories to classify an audience;
-          Class
-          Age (under 16, 16-19, 30-45, 45-60. 60+)
-          Gender
-          Interests/attitudes/beliefs
-          Race
How Horrors use Demographics
Horror movies could be aimed at any off the letter codes. This is because it has such a wide audience. However some horrors do not appeal to all audiences such as a psychological horror may not appeal to the E code as they could be less educated if they are unemployed so would not see the appeal in a psychological horror.
