Preliminary task analysis

The planning which my group, and I did, helped the filming process much easier to do. We started off with an A4 piece f paper which we written down some very simple ideas for a plot our preliminary task. We then started to think about which would be the best film, and why it would be. This A4 piece of planning helped us to keep out roots when filming and to make sure we didn’t completely change our plot while filming. After we figured out what our preliminary task should be, we started to discuss the different camera angles we would use. After many suggestions about what camera angles to use and how they would be effective in our plot/story, we hen started to talk about how our story boards should look like. The story boards we created where our backbone to fall upon when filming. This is because we had something to go buy, and keep to.

When creating preliminary task I learned about getting the correct lighting because in one of my shots the lighting was very dark as there was a window behind one of the actors so it messed up the lighting on the camera. I had to edit the shots but I couldn’t edit the shots to make it brighter so it made the shots look different from other shots when I edit the shots altogether.

I used a variety of shots for example shot reverse shot and match action. An example of shot reverse shot is when 2 people were speaking but this shot wasn't included in the video because we thought it didn't work out as we missed quite a lot of shots so it looked like everything I happening fast, like the video is jumping.

180˚ Rule – This is showing the line between each character. It can also apply when using objects. For example the ¾ line would be the best line to use for eye contact, but we also didn't film this too because we were rushing to finish everything off as we didn't have a lot of time to film.

Other than not getting all the shots we needed, we also had a technical problem with editing too. As it was my first time editing shots, it did take a bit of time to figure what the program can do.

As we carried on, we've finished editing we found out that when we rendered the video, some screen shots were small than the others. For example the very beginning of the opening the video is not fitted on the screen properly so there is quite a lot of black screen left. This makes it look unprofessional and inexperienced.

Sound was also another issue. We mainly filmed our prelim task outside and it was a windy day so we could hear a lot of wind in a lot of shots so it was hard to hear the actors speaking. People were also speaking while we filmed too so we could hear them in the background so it didn't sound very good when we finished editing as you can hear them speaking all the way through the video.

In our preliminary task we used a mobile phone and a piece of paper as props because the plan was the piece of paper has a mobile number which the main character has to call.

Our film was finally filmed. We then had to capture it onto the computers and edit it. I learnt many things while taking part in filming and editing the film. When filming I learned that if we wanted our film to look professional we needed to have continuity with the costumes. Have continuity in our Preliminary Task, we needed to film some scenes twice as we didn't use the same clothes. I have learned that we need to plan what to wear next time when filming a media production. When editing, I learned how to use the school's editing software and how to capture the film onto the computer. After I became familiar with the software, editing was very simple to do.

In conclusion, I highly enjoyed creating our Preliminary Task. Working with people who I know and others who I've became friends with. I believe our production of the Preliminary Task wasn't as good as there was a technical problem with sound and editing, but overall, we all tried our best.
